Everything was plain and the thoughts of the students who were all selected
officers of the corresponding departments; ITE Department, BA Department and the
NURSING Department were all lively. It was Friday; every participant woke up
early to be at the meeting place (Holy Child Vicinity) before 7:00am September
4, 2009. As everyone, gradually arrived with their respected self, bags and
stuffs, all of us were excited and I bit wondering what would our Training and
Seminar would be like. Sir Jerson Dedel the Dean of BA Department and Ms. April
Protasio-Holy Child College Guidance Counselor were there to accompany everyone.
Most of us expected to have a Speaker that will be speaking about his/her
achievements and that entire thing ordinary in every seminar. But as Sir Dedel,
the coordinator of the event said that it would be far from being
common—everyone’s interest aroused.
We commuted, all of
us fitted on a medium-sized PUJ even if some of us were barely sitting. It was
fun, the noise and laughter filled the atmosphere inside the jeep. Though most
of us thought that Punta Dumalag was a distance away from Davao City, well we
were wrong. As we get closer to Angel’s Hideaway at Punta Dumalag, Matina
everyone just couldn’t stop rushing and hasting to arrive at the said area—the
Beach. There we were, seeing the scenic view of little boracay especially with
their white sand, the cool, the breezy and clean sea water waiting before our
eyes.
For the First part
of our training, we were divided into 3 groups randomly and each group would
initiate one of the three courses prepared for everyone. Among those so called
Obstacle or team-building games were The Trust Fall, Human Pyramid and The
Spider Web. Every course was being facilitated by one leader or DAT officer and
Sir Jerson Himself. For the Trust Fall, trust for your team was being tested by
letting yourself fall from a 5feet high elevation and being caught by your
teammates. Whew! It was a thrilling and nervous breaking activity. The second
track was the Human Pyramid; it needs strength, strategy, balance and teamwork
to get through the course. The thing to be tested was how firm you stand as a
human pyramid. The last course was the most enjoyable but strategic obstacle—the
Spider Web. The Web has 12 holes; each member should pass on each hole one by
one and only once it would be closed if it was already been used. Teamwork and
good planning strategy were needed for everybody to get through. All the courses
were great, teamwork was tested and leadership was developed.
We took out lunch
having a Boodle Fight. Everyone was lined up in a long table and the food
(composed with rice, pancit and fried fish) were mixed together on a Banana
leaf. It was a one-handed eating—and after the meal, everyone with no exemptions
was full. The Seminar continued after a 30min break. It’s time to know what
leadership means, with our speaker Jay Fuentes of Education Department Weekend
Program. People learned a lot, what a leader is, how to become one and what the
trait of a good one is. Later, after the lecture it was part of the program to
elect the 2009-2010 Student’s Council Officers with the notion of every officers
present. Voting for the next SC leader was a crucial stage; everyone denied the
seat for the president, until a proper voting procedure has taken place and the
new set of officers were elected.
At the end of the
Training and Seminar, everyone was satisfied—with the learning and great
encouragement thrown by one another. Great power lays great responsibility – Ben
Parker.
